The Original Beauty Blender: Iconic Beauty
The Original Beauty Blender is the makeup tool that began a revolution. I can’t think of one beauty buff who isn’t familiar with the now oh-so-famous pink egg-shaped sponge. However, not everyone knows the amazing story behind the conception and creation of Beauty Blender.
According to the article Woman Made Rae Ann Silva on Violet Grey, Rea Ann Silva, the company’s founder and celebrity makeup artist, fashioned the Beauty Blender while working in a Los Angeles Department Store. She was working her way through fashion school at FIDM, calling the gig “a fun way to get by.” This is where Silva says she learned the fine art of makeup technique and application, although she never expected to pursue makeup artistry as a full time career.
Eventually this fun “side-gig” led to job after job in the film and television industry. A makeup job on one of the first HD television series was the start of what would eventually become a beauty world phenomenon. Silva noticed right away that the HD camera picked up every perfection, and that piling layer after layer on an actor’s face eventually made for a very unnatural and caky appearance.
“Necessity is the Mother of Invention.”
Silva took a wedge-shaped sponge, rounded the corners and used this classic tool in a new way, creating flawless and natural looking makeup. The sponge absorbed oil, kept the product attached to the skin and fit seamlessly into the world of makeup for HD television and film.
Eventually, word spread about her special sponges and fellow artists were begging for her to make extra for themselves as well. Several years later, the now famous pink sponge is iconic and sold nearly everywhere.
Silva also chose the hot pink color for a reason, even though she was met with opposition from the product development team. She was told that no one made sponges in such a dynamic color. This was Silva’s response:
“That’s exactly why we’re going to do it. People will see it from across the room and wonder what it is.”
And that, my friends, is how The Original Beauty Blender was born.
5 Reasons Why We All Should Own at least one Beauty Blender.
Since it’s introduction into the market, we have seen dozens and dozens of copycat products, but nothing beats the real deal in my opinion. Here are five really solid reasons to stock up on those little pink egg shaped sponges:
- This quaint little tool is hydrophilic which means it absorbs water, and oil. So it’s going to absorb excess oil while blending your product.
- It works with both liquid and powder based products. I don’t think that needs any further explanation.
- You can use it to refresh your makeup during the day since it absorbs water and oil.
- It’s non-abrasive so it’s great for sensitive skin as well as normal skin.
- It gives you a gorgeous, camera ready and flawless finish. I can attest to this because I’ve used it vs a brush and can see the difference. I love my brushes, but this takes things to a whole new level.
