Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Facial Cleanser?

Facial cleanser is an absolute must when it comes to a sold skincare routine. There are other products which can be added or subtracted according to your specific skincare needs or budget. However, if I were only allowed to choose two products, I would definitely stick with a good cleanser and moisturizer. Everything else ( which is totally important, don’t get me wrong ) can be added at later times when budget and time allow.

However, before you grab that cleanser off the shelf and run, there are a few things you should consider when choosing a formula.

Go with a formula which complements your skin type

There are so many choices on the market when it comes to cleansers that you can afford to be picky. Just about every single line whether Mastige or Prestige has different collections for different skin concerns. Skin that is more oily or combination will need more exfoliating and oil-control specific ingredients. Prone to irritation? Then you need something more mild and hypoallergenic. A great gentle cleanser is this Evoluderm Micellar Water Cleansing Foam. It’s lightweight, gentle and great for sensitive skin. Evoluderm Rinse-Off Cleansing Oil is also great for dry skin that needs a little extra softening. It won’t leave your skin greasy, either!

Moisturizing cleansers provide additional benefits

Even oily skin needs moisture, because if your skin gets too dry, it will create problems whether you’re oily or not. Good moisturizing cleansers don’t take the place of your day or night cream, but they add that extra little boost. Some products contain drying agents and these can throw your skin’s pH balance out of whack. Andalou Naturals has some really wonderful hydrating cleansers, like this Coconut Water Firming Cleanser. It contains moisture-binding agents so it’s hydrating your skin ( prickly pear cactus is one of the ingredients ) while cleansing. For oily skin, I recommend this Andalou Naturals Citrus Kombucha Cleansing Gel. It helps clarify your skin without drawing out moisture in the process. I’ve tried all of the Andalou cleansers, and they are good, but this is the one which works best for my skin type.

Elemis has a great Pro-Collagen cleansing balm which moisturizes, hydrates and stimulates collagen production in the skin while using.

Timing is everything

The absolute best time to use your cleanser is in the morning, right when you wake up. It washes off the bacteria which have accumulated while you’ve been asleep.

Other key times are right before you go to bed ( to wash off all the stuff your skin has accumulated throughout the day ) and right after a workout or strenuous activity outside.  You don’t have to wash your face multiple times a day; I usually stick to morning and night. If I’ve gone to the gym, I’ll wash my face when I get home to clear off excess sweat and oil. Otherwise, if you’re cleansing too much, you could actually throw your skin’s balance off and create more problems than benefits.
