Beauty Trends That Expired in 2018

2017 was an interesting year for beauty trends. The beauty world was introduced to a massive amount of new trends that surprised and straight-up horrified. We saw everything from hair on nails to glitter on butts. For the meme-worthy makeup trends, there is simply no place in 2018–they had their short lived shelf lives and have long since expired. However, before some of the outrageous trends are torn up and shredded to bits, it is important to point out that no trend truly ever expires (proof: crimped hair). All we can do is hope and pray that some trends never come back to full existence. Even still, I can assure you that we won’t be seeing the wackest trends of 2017 anytime soon. Pay your respects ladies, here are the beauty trends that expired as of 2018:

  1. 2017 was the year of the brow; but what exactly were people trying to achieve with the wavy, squiggle eyebrow look? I mean really, can you ladies believe that it was one of the most imitated looks, making waves (pun intended) across social media. There was also the feathered brow, the nobrow, the carved brow, and even the unibrow. I miss the days when tweezing and neatly filling in the brow was all we had to worry about. In 2018, we are going back to the old brow ways, and I’m not at all sad about it. Try: Nicka K Tweezers and e.l.f. Eyebrow Lifter & Filler.
  2. The lollipop lip trend was just a terrible, terrible mistake. It was started by M.A.C. Cosmetics on runway models in the spring of 2017. They smudged the outer lines of the lips after applying lipstick to make it appear as if the models were sucking on a lollipop. So, the look that everyone avoided–like literally went out of their way not to eat or drink with lipstick on–made a weird stint in 2017. This trend was actually perfect for anyone who couldn’t seem to master coloring inside the lines, but I imagine it would lead to some awkward conversations when trying to explain the disheveled look to the uninitiated. How about let’s go back to subtle lip lining in 2018. Try: ColourPop Lippie Pencil or Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.
  3. The unicorn beauty trend was the absolute worst. In 2017, we saw unicorn everything: nails, hair, eyes, lips, even unicorn frappuccinos (ew). In a fit of Lisa Frank-fueled nostalgia, makeup brands pushed unicorn highlighters, eye shadows, and various forms of unicorn inspired goop–most packed with flakes of garish glitter. Worst of all, unicorn hair even put one woman in the hospital. In terms of looking out of our wellbeing, it’s best we just stay away from anything unicorn in 2018. If you’ve been affected by unicorn hair, try Andalou Naturals Argan Stem Cells Age Defying Scalp Intensive.

In the end, there is an apparent, recurring pattern to the obnoxious and terrible trends of 2017–extra. The brows, the lips, the unicorn everything from head to toe was all just so in your face, over the top, and as stated before, extra. Now that we’ve reflected back on the hard lessons we learned from the worst of 2017, we can move into 2018 with a fresh foundation. I think it is safe to say that 2018 will not be as extra as 2017. We’re hoping it will be a little more tamed, a lot less in your face, and headed in a more simple and natural direction.
