Good ole summer is right around the corner bringing endless sun and shine, and I am here for it, honey! As much as I love the scorching sun, I detest the amount of sweat my body produces to combat it. If your sweat glands are anything like mine you can just look at a painting of the sun and your body immediately starts producing waterfalls. Back in 2015; I was in Jamaica, which has a hot, tropical climate. I was walking from the front door of our Airbnb to the taxi, which was about 50 feet away. In that 1-minute walk to the cab my body had produced so much sweat that the taxi man asked if I had just gotten out of the shower. Totally embarrassed, I lied and said ‘yes,’ everything from my pits to my hair was soaked. Unfortunately, for me I had never heard about dry shampoo and all its glory. If I had known about this one product three years ago, it would have saved me money and endless hours of washing my sweat drenched hair.
What Is Dry Shampoo?
Dry shampoo is a product that was created to help combat oily scalps and add life back into hair inbetween washes. It comes in many forms, but I am here to talk about the most convenient one, which is in an aerosol can. Dry shamps are typically formulated using alcohol and fine powder. The powder can come from any number of sources such as: clay, ash, tapioca, and/or starches.
Dry shampoo is not a new concept; it has actually been used in the Asian subcontinent since the 1400s where people would use clay to refresh their hair. It wasn’t a commercialized product until the 1940s, when Minipoo Dry Shampoo hit the scene, according to Garnier USA. Minipoo advertised that its product is great for when you are sick and don’t have energy to wash you hair, or a short notice date and even a preserver to keep perms intact. Jump forward to 2018 and dry shampoo is advertising the same thing. It’s great for a quick refresh, keeps hairstyles from becoming disheveled and gives some bomb volume when hair is feeling limp.
How Does It Work?
Dry shampoo works by absorbing excess sebum (oil excreting from the roots) that builds up on your scalp. When the spray absorbs the unwanted oil, your hair comes back to life allowing you to get on with your day. You can save a lot of time and money by using dry shampoo frequently. It increases the lifespan between washes giving your scalp a break from constant heavy washes.
How To Use Dry Shampoo –
Always shake the can before each use. This ensures that powder that has landed in the bottom of the can is distributed evenly before spraying. Dry shampoo is not hairspray – DO NOT MIST ALL OVER. What you will need to do is lift sections of your hair from the scalp and spray about 6 inches away. Once you have done this in your trouble spots be sure to massage the dry shampoo into your head. This really helps with the absorption process. Once you’ve done these steps your hair should almost be like brand new.
