I don’t know anyone on this planet who hasn’t used a filter at least once. That includes even me.
I use them all the time. Bunny ears, sparkly faces, makeup-adding, cute doggies, I’ve tried them all and I’ve become pretty addicted to them. Seriously; my TL for an entire year had nothing but filtered pictures on it. That’s when I decided to try a new tradition: taking pictures without the assistance of a filter. It’s hard as hell, you guys. Super hard.
Lucky for me, I found ways to create photo-perfect looks without relying on that fancy Snapchat or Insta filter. In fact, before the invention of smartphones and selfie filters, makeup artists relied on a harmonious blend of products to create a photo-ready look. These “trade secrets” were once heavily guarded and not readily shared with others. Now that things have changed, it’s easy to access tutorials, how-tos, and makeup artist secrets without having to shell out thousands of dollars to do so. Although I would never down education or deter anyone from investing in their education, I am a fan of investing wisely when it comes to paid learning. You don’t need a degree to be successful in artistic fields, although having one does help you in certain ways. What you need are mad skills, a good portfolio and willingness to hustle to get your work seen.
That being said, here are some quick and easy ways to get that perfect look without using a filter (although you’re more than welcome to use one if you like):
1. Use a warm-toned BB cream, bronzer or contour kit underneath your foundation.
Sometimes products can be intimidating when we take them out of the box. Even if you’ve spent time at the makeup counter learning how to use your product, it’s not common to have forgotten everything by the time you get home. Things go by so quickly, and you’re caught up in the moment, you look great, you buy a bunch of stuff, then get home and realize you need some help. It happens to all of us, especially when it comes to makeup tricks which are easier than they look.
I’m a lazy beauty buff, not even going to lie. I don’t want to spend time contouring and what-not, so I use BB creams and bronzers to add a layer of healthy glow to my overall look. I find it’s the fastest, easiest way for me to get ready and out the door each morning. Products I would recommend (and all of them are available at Just4Girls.pk!) are Morphe Bronzer + Contour= Brontour in Gliterrati and Showmance. Glitterati is best for fair to mid skin tones and Showmance is for mid to darker skin tones. These two-tone palettes give your face a warm, soft glow and you can use these under and over your foundation. If you’re using over your foundation as a bronzer, go with the lighter shade and use a very loose bristled brush like a kabuki brush to get a soft glow. Catrice has a great California in a Box palette which includes bronzers and blushers to give your face some rosy warmth. I love this palette and the colors look so good on the face!
Another palette I LOVE is this NYX Love Contours All Palette. It contains contour, highlight and eyeshadow colors all in the same color family/area on the color wheel. The best part about this palette is it is all neutral, so if you’re a beginner, this is one of the absolute best palettes to start with! Neutral tones are a newbie’s best friend!
Evoluderm has a fabulous BB Cream that is filled with natural, great ingredients. This formula not only provides great coverage but hydrates your skin as well.
2. Go with a Foundation that gives little to no flashback.
Flashback was considered a bad word in photography and makeup artistry when I was a young woman starting in the business. Flashback is when you take a picture, then notice there are white, splotchy areas across your face. This is because some makeup foundations, powders, and primers have reflective flecks or properties in the formula. Savvy photographers and makeup artists had to use photography techniques to outwit the dreaded flashback.
Lucky for us, we now have both technology and technology-ready products to make creating great pictures as effortless as possible. Not to mention the foundation formula has changed so much across the board that most foundations are now insta-ready and formulated specifically to make your digital pictures sing.
My go-to foundation is Wet ‘N Wild’s Photofocus Foundation. I’ve been using this formula for a few years now, and I’m always amazed at how great my pictures look like when wearing it. I’ve taken to using different shades of the foundation and concealer for my contouring and highlighting and it looks amazing. Just4Girls.pk has several different shades of this formula available, as well as foundation shots so you can try before you buy. I use Porcelain 360C for my highlight and it’s gorgeous. Peach Natural 367C is what I use on my cheekbones and nose, and Toffee Pecan is what I use for my darker contour areas. Since I have fair skin, I try to stay away from super dark contour shades. This keeps my makeup close to or an exact match to my skin tone, plus I don’t have to worry about my face and neck not matching each other. Photofocus also has a line of powders, concealers and setting sprays to complete your look. One of my favorites is this Wet N Wild Photofocus Color Corrector in Peach. I use it with my regular Photofocus concealer and cocktail it with a serum and moisturizer. This gives me coverage and says bye-bye to dark circles as well as keeps me hydrated.
3. Primers are a MUST!
Primers have become one of the most sought-after products on the market. They’ve been around way before Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, and until recently, have been an MUA’s best-kept secret. Primers come in all kinds of formulas for all kinds of skin types. The most popular are those which help eliminate flashback and smooth the appearance of pores.
Fenty Beauty Pro Filter Instant Retouch Primer in Soft Matte is one of my favorite primers out there. Not only does it look great on all skin types, butit also helps your foundation go on smoothly and softly. Becca Backlight Priming Filter also is another cult favorite, and worth every penny. These two do have a bit of a higher pricetag, but they are so worth it.
MUA Pro Base Soothe & Cool Primer Stick is another must-have for your makeup kit. It’s the perfect companion for MUA’s Pro-Base Long Wear Matte Foundation, not to mention it makes your face feel so great!
Other great primers (all available at Just4Girls.pk) are: Makeup Revolution Pore Blur Primer, W7 Cosmetics Prime Magic Face Primer in Camera Ready, Makeup Revolution Blur Primer, and Dermacol Satin Makeup Base. These are all very high quality products available for a fabulously low price. MUA’s Pro-Base line is by far one of my absolute favorites.
