If you’re a lipstick maverick like me, then chances are you’ve got a pretty good collection of colors, formulas and stains. I’ve got too many to count, and yes, I actually do wear them all. I rotate my colors out and often blend shades and hues to create the perfect lip to complement whatever makeup look I’m going for.

Each season brings new “trends” in every aspect of fashion and creativity. There are trendy colors, trendy formulas, trendy brands, trendy ways to display or arrange your makeup, and of course, trendy makeup looks in general. Now that we are in the last throes of Winter and are slowly but surely heading into Spring. I worked for a cosmetics company, and there are certain color rules which tend to be “standard” for every season. Fall and Winter usually means darker colors deep reds, and more glitter. Spring features more pinks, softer tones, and Summer we see lots of corals and reds. With the advent of new companies, more non-conventional color choices and the rise of the Instagram star, trends tend to be a little more “out of the box.”

I always try to update my look and step out of my comfort zone, which can be a bit daunting for me.  I’ll be thirty-nine years old this year, so I tend to stick with what I “know,” however, makeup is all about having fun, being daring and being creative. Since I’m also an Artist and Animator, I figured I had better live up to my creativity and let go of my “security blanket” and try something new.

Here are some trending looks which have become big hits so far in 2018:

Glass Lips: Dewy skin has been a huge trend look as far as makeup goes. It began in 2017 ( I was still working for a major cosmetic company when this look launched, and it was the theme of most of the makeovers I did for clients ) and carries into 2018. Now we are seeing more “dewy” lips which earned the trend the nickname “glass lips.” To get the look, simply find your favorite gloss, like Fenty Beauty’s Universal Gloss Bomb, pucker up, apply and off you go. You can get a little more in-depth with this look and add dimension by taking one of your favorite lip stains or satin stains and then top with a clear lip gloss. My favorite clear lip gloss as of recent is Hard Candy Plumping Serum Volumizing Lipgloss in “It Girl.” If you want one with some tint to it, then snap up Hard Candy Plumping Serum Lipgloss in Nude Beach Copper.  Want to amp up your glass lip? Use this HudaBeauty Strobe Metallic Lip Gloss in “Enchanting.”

Makeout Lips: Also known as the “I just woke up lips,” I’m pretty sure this is a lip trend I’ve been accidentally following for most of my adult makeup-wearing life. It’s pretty much the “no lipstick lipstick” look, it’s very bare and minimal, and it’s very chic. I admit, I have a soft spot for nude lips and amped up eyes. You can get this look using any lipstick, but it’s most likely going to work better if you use lip balm and a creme lipstick. You can do matte, but you’ll have to work a little harder to make it worn. This is kind of a “distressed” lip for lack of a better term. To get this lip, apply your favorite lip balm to your bare lips first and foremost. My favorite lip balm to use is Burt’s Bees Original Peppermint and Vitamin E Lip Balm Formula.  Honestly, I love Burt’s Bees products so much, I usually invest in the original formula and this Superfruit Four Lip Balm Collection.  Next, you want to add your favorite color of nude lipstick ( again, the creme versions are best ). You can blot on a napkin if you’ve added a little too much color, or just add a little at a time. Sometimes I add a little bit of color, then put another layer of lip balm over my color. I like MUA’s “Barely There”  and “Juicy.”

Cupid’s Bow: This look is a little easier to pull off. It’s getting the shape correctly that gives me a hang up. To create this look, you want to create sharp angles at the top corners of your lip, other wise known as the “cupid’s bow.” Make sure they are really defined with sharp lines; this is a totally different effect than the korean doll version and the flapper version of this lip. Use the darkest shade of lipstick you’re comfortable with ( I use NYX Full Throttle Lipstick in “Night Crawler.” ) and then line the very top of the cupids bow, or the “V” with a hot gold metallic liner. You’re probably going to have to use a metallic eyeliner, which is fine. Some good options are e.l.f. Cosmetics Glitter Shimmer Eyeliner in Gold,  Wet ‘N Wild Glitter Eyeliner in Gold,   Sleek Makeup Glitter Eyeliner in Gold  and Tarte’s Tarteist Pro Eye Jewels Glitter Liner in White Gold.

Red Lips: The trick to this red lip look is to go very bare with the eyeshadow and eye liner. This look works best with a well defined, groomed brow, some eye-popping mascara ( I recommend Hard Candy Ginormous Lash Mascara in Black Out), and some really shimmery highlight ( Wet ‘N Wild’s MegaGlo Liquid Halo Highlighter in Guilded Gold is amazing ) and of course, your favorite and most complimentary shade of Red Lipstick.

Peachy Lips: This is my favorite of all the 2018 lip looks so far. I absolutely ADORE the color peach, and it’s a gorgeous color which compliments so many skin tones ( Selena Gomez looks absolutely divine in the photo above ). You can pair it with a contrasting eyeshadow shade like Selena’s makeup artist Hung Vanngo has done, or you can use peach blush and peachy toned eyeshadow for a monochromatic look. I’d suggest using I Heart Makeup’s Heart Blusher in Peachy Pink Kisses for your cheeks, and MUA’s Matte Lipstick in “Peachy Keen” for lips.  You can also use blusher palettes for your eyeshadows ( I do ), like this Peach and Baked Blush Palette by Freedom Makeup.
