First off let me say, I am loving my dirty thirties! With that said, when one hits thirties like me, the body starts changing. Pounds can be a little harder to lose and wrinkles and fine lines seem to start meandering across the face. Fine lines are inevitable, but that does not mean that we cannot fight them head-to-head. There are so many topical treatments, creams, and serums out there claiming to be the answer to wrinkles and age spots, but 99% of then are all a farce. There is one ingredient though that has proven itself and is lauded by dermatologists and skin specialists – retinol. Retinol is not new and can be found in department stores, drugstores, and over the counter. Even though it is so readily available people are still not too aware of what retinol is, where it comes from, and why it should be added to your beauty routine. But don’t worry I am about to give you the 411 on this magical stuff, and why you should be using it if you aren’t already.
What Is Retinol?
Retinol along with other retinoids all are derived from vitamin A. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient, which helps the production of new cells and cell turnover. So basically retinol is the purest form of vitamin A and scientists were able to extract it and put in our skincare products. Side note this type of vitamin A can also be found naturally in foods like eggs and carrots.
What Does It Do?
Once retinol is added to topical skincare products it can truly work wonders, such as:
-Promote skin renewal
-Improve skin tone
-Boost the production of collagen
-Fight signs of aging
-Smooth out fine lines
-Help with skin texture
-Aid in creating a youthful glow
I mean it basically does everything, but drive your car.
How Do You Use It?
The average amount of retinol in any given product is 0.1-1.0% concentrate. The higher the percentage the more powerful it is. It is recommended by dermatologists that retinol be only applied at nighttime once or twice a week. You can gradually increase the application number as you find out how your skin reacts. Make sure you apply it at night this is because retinol can dry out the skin and increase sensitivity. Make sure you always apply 30 SPF or higher when using any product with retinol in it.
