Toning Lotions ( or “Toners,” as they have been known in the industry for decades ) are a product that a lot of people have been eliminating from their beauty routine in recent years.
The reason for the almost sudden disappearance of toners is because back in the day, the formulas were primarily alcohol based. This ended up leaving the skin feeling tight and very dry. The purpose of the toner as it was formulated back then was, indeed, to shrink and minimize pores and lock in moisture. However, alcohol ( as we have learned ) is just not a good ingredient for skin. Even if you have oily skin, this is an ingredient which is going to dry and damage your skin after time.
Thankfully, the toner has been re-formulated and offer more benefits according to your skin’s particular needs. Toners generally fall into two categories: ones that chock your skin full of moisture binding agents, minerals and vitamins and ones that remove excess sebum, oil and residue. Regardless of skin type, everyone can benefit from using the correct toning lotion.
Normal to dry skin types should go for the moisturizing formulas ( especially if they contain Vitamins A, E and other soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera or Cucumber ). If you’re wanting anti-aging, then you need a multi-tasking toner that hydrates, exfoliates and protects. Usually these help to protect your skin from environmental elements, lock in moisture and reduce the appearance of aging. If you’re oily, you want one that is an astringent ( meaning it will remove excess oil, but won’t strip the oil completely from your face ).
You can apply toner with a tissue or washcloth, but the best way to apply this product is using cotton pads. Trust me, I’ve tried all of the other ways, and this is just a tried and true method which won’t fail you. You don’t want to apply with your fingers because you’ll soak up a lot of the product in your hands and you can transfer bacteria from your hands to your face.
Where does it fit in your skincare routine? After your cleanser and before your serum or moisturizer.
Evoluderm has a lovely set of Toning Lotions, which suit a variety of skin types ( plus they are all Paraben and Alcohol Free as well as have been Dermatologically Tested ):
- Evoluderm Toning Lotion Combination Skins: This is an appropriate formula for Combination to Oily Skin. It helps to both purify and moisturize skin as well as eliminate impurities ( dust, pollution, etc). Ingredients such as Zinc and Green Tea Extract help to clear the skin of impurities as well as give a healthy dose of antioxidants. It also has three fragrance notes ( Top: Lemon and Grapefruit, Middle: Jasmine, Lemongrass and Verbena and Base: Cedar ) which give it an amazing smell.
- Evoluderm Toning Lotion Normal Skins: This formula is going to suit most skin types. It also eliminates impurities while refreshing, energizing and moisturizing skin. This formula contains Vitamin E, which protects against eternal aggressions and delivers antioxidants to the skin. The other ingredient in this toner is Glycerin, which is currently one of my favorite moisture binding products. It moisturizes in depth and leaves your skin feeling supple and smooth ( Top Note: Bergamot, Middle Note: Jasmine and Melon, Base Note: Cedar ).
- Evoluderm Toning Lotion Sensitive Skin: If your skin is prone to any kind of irritation or flare-ups, this is the formula best suited for you. It soothes, calms and moisturizes skin while also eliminating impurities. Rose Floral Water helps to soothe skin and reduce redness while Glycerin moisturizes in depth. This formula is available in 250 ml as well as 500 ml. The overall fragrance of this is Rose, which is one of my favorite scents.
